i always take my time to straighten my hair using a flat iron, but when i go outside for a few hours, my hair begins to wave back and the texture doesn't look soft anymore. what do i do?!

It's humidity. Aussie makes a great (I swear by it) Anti-humidity hair spray for about three bucks, and you can find it everywhere. One bottle lasted me the entire semester and most of this summer, and it works wonders! Just spray it, comb through hair, then mist lightly. And use a straightening gel and blow it out before you flat iron.

And don't use gel! It wets your hair and curls it back up! Anytime I use gel my hair stays, but curls up again. If you must use gel, find some for straight hair. I believe Aussie makes that too.
