I would rather you have a roller set...but if not...stay away from the hot comb and get a really good ceramci flat iron...now you ask so Conair, Relvon, or a cheap flat iron from Walmart and I say NO Chi (www.farouk.com), Sedu, Soilia, GHD,

check out folica.com

I put some CHI Silk Infusion on my damp hair and work it all over my hair and then blow dry in sections. Then I use CHI Shine infusion thermal protector when i am flat ironing. My hair is in the best shape it has ever been.

I use a ceramic flat iron and it is my new favorite thing! I only have to use it right after I shampoo and blow dry my hair if I wrap it properly each night. Make sure you purchase a good one though, some of them aren't as great as others!

Hi, I'm African American too. I have been straightening my hair with Ceramic irons for the last 4 years. I grew my relaxer out 5years ago. The safest thing to do is to invest in a really good ceramic iron, i.e. Chi, Corolis(sp.?), or one that has uses ceramic plates infused with Tourmaline. I also suggest adding a light oil like Biosilk or Keracare thermal products to protect it from too much heat if you will be straightening it often. Good luck!

I had heard really great things about Chi Iron Guard thermal spray by Farouk systems. But since I'm cheap, I bought the generic version at Sally's and I really like it. It really does protect your hair from the heat and moisturizers. Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide is nice, too (got it on sale). But out of the two, I prefer the cheapo version of the Chi Iron guard spray.
