First you need to make sure you use a moisturizing shampoo (I use Back 2 Basics) and then condition it really well (I prefer Biolage or Paul Mitchell). When you're flat ironing your hair use a little hair gloss. Every line of professional hair products (sold in beauty salons) has gloss. They are sometimes pricey but worth it.

i had a crappy straightener (cheap, like $15) and the porcelain wore off and exposed the metal within like 10 uses.

i had no idea! but what happens is the plates snag on your hair and create alot of damage! so if you straighten and you feel a sort of lagging or crunch, then you are probably not using a straightener to begin with

Pretty much any serum that contains silicones will work but I can recommend the best ones. The first ingredients listed will usually say Cyclomethicone or Dimethicone. There are tons on the market. Most product lines have developed one. They make your hair soft, smooth and silky. I'm a big fan of Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. It works very well and has a nice sweet scent. But I also love love the serum by Biosilk and also Ion Silk Drops because those two can also be used on the skin to make it super silky and hydrate it as well. My boyfriend loves to touch my skin after I use them. Just remember with all of these, a little goes a long way. After straightening, I usually rub just a few drops between my hands and work through my hair concentrating on the edges and especially the ENDS. You'll also want to remember to use a good conditioner after washing your hair. I like to use a SMOOTHING conditioner. Also use a good leave-in conditoner/ heat protectant before blow drying or straightening you hair. This will help your hair stay hydrated throughout all the heat processing. And the serums are always the perfect finishing touch.
